The following subsidiaries of Unum Group offer products under the Unum brand in the U.S.:

  • Provident Life and Accident Insurance Company offers individual income protection and life insurance in all states except New York;
  • Unum Life Insurance Company of America offers group income protection, life, long term care and special risk insurance in all states except New York;
  • The Paul Revere Life Insurance Company offers individual income protection and life insurance products in New York and other states;
  • First Unum Life Insurance Company offers products in New York similar to those offered by Colonial and Unum America in other states;
  • Provident Life and Casualty Insurance Company offers individual income protection products in New York and other states.

The Unum Group has 10,000 employees worldwide and is the largest disability insurer in the U.S. Their subsidiaries cover 44% of the employees of the Fortune 500 with group disability plans.


The Group was formed after Provident purchased Paul Revere in 1997 and then Unum merged with Provident in 1999. The name of the new company, in 1999, was UnumProvident Corpporation. After bad publicity following the company's regulatory settlement agreement to reassess hundreds of thousands of disability claim terminations and denials, the name was changed to "Unum".


Quadrino Schwartz was the first law firm in the United States to bring a class action lawsuit against the company. In that lawsuit, a federal judge has certified as a class all persons who had their claims denied or terminated during a particualr period of time.
